Cafe Kumbuk is a lovely cafeteria in the heart of Colombo. It was our first morning in Colombo and we chose this place to grab Brunch. The staff is pretty welcoming. Coffee was superb and came with a small coconut treat. Food was nice, well presented but some dishes lack flavours. Burger was 10/10 though. Prices are a bit on the higher side. The indoor seating was full so we sat outdoors, they have a small fish pond there.

My Review – Kumbuk CafΓ©

Overall, I enjoyed my visit. The cafΓ© has a pleasant atmosphere, comfortable seating, fair prices, and a menu with many interesting vegetarian options. It feels like a place with a clear concept and a lot of potential.

The Flat White was beautifully presented and came with a small complimentary treat, which was a nice touch.

I ordered the toast with eggs. The eggs themselves were fresh, well-cooked, and nicely presented with microgreens in a small ceramic pan. I also liked the choice of dark bread.

However, the dish didn’t quite come together as a whole. The passion fruit dressing added a pleasant acidity, but it was placed around the edge of the plate, so it felt more decorative than functional. Only when I intentionally combined it with each bite did the flavors really work together. I think the dressing should be incorporated into the dish in a way that naturally becomes part of every bite.

Another thing I found confusing was serving the eggs separately from the toast. While the presentation looked nice, it made the dish less convenient to eat because I had to assemble it myself. I believe it would create a much better guest experience if everything arrived together on one plate.

Unfortunately, several menu items were unavailable, and I only discovered this after I had already started ordering. It would be much more welcoming if guests were informed about unavailable dishes before they begin choosing.

The first impression could also be improved. When I asked to sit at a particular table, I was asked to move because it was being kept for two people. While I understand the reasoning, the interaction felt transactional rather than welcoming.

The biggest opportunity, in my opinion, is team training. The staff were polite, and I noticed some genuine interaction with guests, especially children, which was nice to see. However, overall it felt as though the team was more focused on each other than on creating a connection with the guests. There was very little proactive hospitality or engagement.

Good service is not only about taking orders and delivering foodβ€”it is about making guests feel noticed, welcomed, and genuinely cared for. With more training in guest interaction and hospitality, I believe Kumbuk could elevate the entire dining experience to match the quality of its concept.

Had to give it a 3 star because the Ambience wasn't the best.
Indoor space is very small and cramped up. If you are expecting a cozy chill place this wouldn't be the best. Gets extremely loud if your fellow diners start to chat aloud. The outdoor space is good and spacious. Too much tables and chairs crammed into a tiny space inside. Parking well is adequate but it's in a residential lane so there's that.

Now to the Good stuff.
The staff are really nice and well mannered. Kudos on the PR effort.

The food was on point bang for the buck
Well presented and was tasty. Proportions were adequate as well.
The service was great as well promptly served meals.
Food , staff, and service really good.
Ambience not the best.

Would I return, for sure yes to check out the rest of the menu.

Cafe Kumbuk is such a gem!
We stayed in Srilax above the cafe and we enjoyed the cafe for many meals as well.
They have delicious food coming in satisfying portions; very helpful and positive staff, we especially appreciate Kavi for being such a sweetheart.
We want to come back another time so we can try more foods from the menu πŸ™ŒπŸ˜Š
I couldn't take photos of all that we ate because the moment the food arrived to the table, the kids were attacking them, for the good 😁

Pretty solid breakfast/brunch spot in Colombo. The spot had ample parking so that wasn't an issue.

We visited on a Saturday and the staff were pretty nice and welcoming. It was pretty packed tho , so do keep that in mind.

The food itself was on the pricier side , but it looks pretty amazing. Tastewise it was pretty good , but nothing special.

Overall pretty nice spot to go to for breakfast or brunch. Can recommend.
